Karen Mortland is known as one of the top Pathology Laboratory designers in the country. She is the only registered Architect and certified Medical Technologist in the nation that is designing laboratories. She has 18 years experience designing laboratory facilities and 10 years working on the bench in Clinical Pathology. She brings insight into the topic from both an Architect's and a Technologist's point of view.

Ms. Mortland has been a featured speaker for national and international conferences sponsored by CLMA, AACC, AHA, AIA, ASHE ASCLS, Tradelines, Health Facilities Institute, LabAutomation, EuroLabAutomation, and CAPPA.

She is the chair of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute subcommittee for Laboratory Design and just completed writing the new Lab Design Guidelines (GP18A). She assisted in the writing of the last issue of the guidelines (formerly NCCLS). In addition, she has assisted as a Consultant to the Joint Commision and the AIA/US Dept of Health and Human Services for the Guidelines for Laboratory Design.

Articles on laboratory design written by Ms. Mortland in conjunction with her husband Daniel Mortland have been published in CLMR Probe, JALA Laboratory Medicine and Advance. They wrote a feature column for CLMR called "Laboratory Design".

Mortland Planning & Design was founded in 2000 and has since worked on laboratories all over the United States and in several other countries. Experience includes all aspects of clinical and surgical pathology including Robotics installations, Molecular Diagnostics, Cytogenetics, Flow Cytometry, Toxicology (clinical and forensic), GMP Stem cell BSL3 facilities, and Donor/Apheresis.
